Main History (≤100 words)
In 1394 the Ming dynasty built Xiamen Fort; in the mid-17th century it served as Koxinga’s anti-Qing base. Opened as one of the five treaty ports in 1842, it became a Special Economic Zone in 1980 and is now a key hub of the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road and a gateway for cross-strait exchange.

Southeast coast of Fujian, at the mouth of the Jiulong River, facing the Taiwan Strait and lying between the Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze Delta.

Islands alternate with bays; terrain is higher in the south and lower in the north. Xiamen Island covers 158 km²; the highest point, Yunding Rock, is 339.6 m. A winding coastline features capes, beaches and mangroves.
