How to get an access to Internet when foreigners travelling in China?

Home Page    Travel News    How to get an access to Internet when foreigners travelling in China?

When foreigners travel to China, there are typically three ways to access the internet: international roaming, eSIM cards, and tourist SIM cards. Below is a detailed explanation of each method.

International Roaming
Choosing international roaming while traveling in China allows foreigners to retain their personal phone numbers. However, this convenience often comes at a high cost. Before departure, it's crucial to thoroughly understand the potential roaming charges in China and inquire about any partnerships with Chinese telecom networks that might offer more favorable rates.

eSIM Cards
eSIM cards are generally a more economical option, offering competitive rates for calls, texts, and data, especially when compared to the typically exorbitant costs associated with international roaming. An eSIM's 15 GB data plan, for instance, can cost as little as $21 (approximately 150 RMB), eliminating the need for a physical SIM card and additional setup processes. This option is particularly convenient for travelers as it can even be activated before arriving in China. However, the drawback is that eSIM cards do not provide a phone number, thus disabling the ability to make calls or receive text messages.

Tourist SIM Cards
Upon arrival in China, tourists can purchase SIM cards with local Chinese numbers at airports using their passports. These SIM cards enable direct receipt of text messages and making phone calls, which are essential for various tasks such as registering for app accounts, hailing taxis, ordering food delivery, booking hotels, and purchasing tickets. This significantly enhances the convenience of foreign travelers in China. Moreover, these SIM cards offer competitive pricing compared to international roaming and eSIM cards. For example, China Mobile offers a package with 20 GB of data and 80 minutes of talk time for just 150 RMB (approximately $21).
