Main History
Under Qin and Han it was part of Nanhai Commandery. The 1842 Treaty of Nanking ceded Hong Kong Island, the 1860 Convention of Peking ceded Kowloon, and the 1898 Second Convention leased the New Territories for 99 years. On 1 July 1997 Hong Kong returned to China and became a Special Administrative Region under “One Country, Two Systems”.
