Ningxia, Jiangnan on the Plateau
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, known as the "Jiangnan on the Plateau," integrates the grandeur of vast deserts and solitary smokes with the gentle charm of landscapes reminiscent of southern China, using the Yellow River as its lifeblood and the Helan Mountains as its backbone. Western Xia Tombs National Archaeological Park
The royal mausoleums of the Western Xia Dynasty (1038–1227), featuring nine imperial tombs and 271 accompanying burial mounds, are dubbed the "Oriental Pyramids." After being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024, the on-site museum displays national treasures like gilded bronze oxen and inscribed stelae with Western Xia script, brought to life through digital technologies. Sunset casts a golden glow over the tombs against the Helan Mountains, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
Helan Mountain Rock Art
Over 6,000 rock carvings spanning 10,000 years in the Helan Mountains depict ancient hunting scenes, rituals, and celestial worship. Iconic motifs like the "Sun God" and "Human Face" are paired with digital exhibitions, allowing visitors to engage with humanity’s enduring quest for meaning.
Shuidonggou Ruins
China’s earliest-discovered Paleolithic site reveals 30,000-year-old human activity traces alongside Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) underground military tunnels. Camel-cart rides through Yadan canyons and explorations of hidden fortifications offer a dual journey into prehistory and borderland warfare.
Shapotou Tourist Area
Where the Yellow River meets the Tengger Desert, this 5A-rated scenic spot embodies the poetic line "Lonely smoke rises over the desert; the setting sun glows red on the river." Activities include sandboarding, camel treks, and rafting on goatskin floats. The "straw checkerboard" desertification control method showcases China’s ecological ingenuity, while the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway slices through golden dunes like a steel dragon.
Shahu Ecological Tourism Zone
Dubbed the "Pearl of the Plateau," Shahu merges southern water towns’ elegance with desert landscapes. Summer brings vibrant lavender fields and lotus ponds, while bird islands teem with migratory flocks. Boat rides through reed mazes and tastings of the local fish head hotpot highlight the surreal coexistence of desert and lake.
Tengger Desert Wetland Golden Sand Island
A desert oasis 15 km from Zhongwei City, this site features a tri-colored palette of purple herb gardens, golden beaches, and wetland lakes. Summer blooms of verbena and lavender contrast with thrilling desert motorbiking and aquatic biking, epitomizing ecological resilience.
Zhenbeibao Western Film Studio
Transformed from Ming-Qing fortresses, this cradle of Chinese cinema birthed classics like A Chinese Odyssey and Red Sorghum. Visitors reenact iconic scenes at the Moon Gate and Spider Cave, or craft intangible cultural heritage items, blending rustic northern charm with cinematic magic.
Guyuan Liupan Mountain Flower Fields
The national "Romantic Flower Sea · Charming Liupan" rural tourism route peaks here. April blossoms at Xumishan Grottoes juxtapose Buddhist statues with peach trees, while June’s Huoshizhai Danxia Landform dons floral robes. Terraced fields at Jinjiping, dubbed "Earth’s Fingerprints," showcase ecological restoration on the Loess Plateau. Quaint alleys and homestays along the route invite slow-paced immersion.
